TPH Academy Detroit Hosts Its 4th Annual 3v3 Tournament

TPH Academy Detroit hosted its 4th annual 3v3 tournament on December 14th of 2022. The 3v3, also known as the TPH Cup, has been a TPH Academy Detroit favorite for the past 4 years. Taking place just before the holiday break, students and coaches alike form into teams to compete in a friendly competitive tournament. Leading up to the 2022 tournament, TPH Academy Detroit staff hosted a live draft, with coaches announcing the teams and providing a background on each player.

Family and friends are invited to watch the 3v3 tournament each year and enjoy a communal lunch. This annual tradition is an opportunity to get to know the TPH Academy Detroit team better and to participate in a community-building event with their student-athletes.

TPH Detroit Director, Dwayne Norris

“It’s a great way to give back, and to be committed to the sport and to the community,” shared Dwyane Norris, Director of TPH Academy Detroit. “We hear from parents, sharing testimonials about their kids in the program. It’s impactful to hear what they value at TPH.”

Players compete for the John Stansik Memorial Trophy, honoring the late John Stansik, who owned the rink that TPH Academy Detroit first called home. Stansik believed in the TPH Academy model and was an ambassador for the organization in its early days. When he passed away unexpectedly in 2016, the TPH Academy Detroit community decided to name the TPH Cup award in Stansik’s honor.

While the on-ice action is highly anticipated, it’s what happens off the ice that sets this event apart. TPH Academy Detroit participates in an adopt-a-family style gift-giving program during the holiday season, providing holiday cheer and brand-new gifts for local families. After battling on the ice, students took off their skates and took to wrapping gifts for families within the Detroit community.
